Be part of "History in the Making" - Singapore's first MDRT Day

| 08 Aug 2018

Asia Advisers Network is the official media partner of Singapore's first MDRT Day "History in the Making" which will take place on 28 August 2018. Fourteen-year Qualifying and Life Member Laura Hoi, ChFC, AEPP, Country Chair of MDRT Membership Communications Committee (MCC) Singapore, shares what you can expect.

If an adviser has attended MDRT Experience in Bangkok and/or MDRT Annual Meeting in Los Angeles this year, why should he still attend MDRT Day?

I attended both the MDRT Experience and Annual Meeting and they were really productive for me with opportunities to sharpen my axe and learn from the best in our industry.

Nonetheless, I would still attend MDRT Day Singapore because the key difference is that most of our speakers will be from Singapore. Hence, it would provide a more relevant and localised perspective of the business to both our members and aspirants.

MDRT day would be beneficial for members and aspirants to learn from industry leaders and be refreshed with great ideas to enhance their business.

The very first MDRT Day Singapore. Why only now?

MCC Singapore was formally established in 2011 and started off with just five volunteers. We began by running one or two small-scale ad hoc events each year with attendance of 100 to 150 people. Over the years, as the number of committee members increased, we were able to organise bigger events, our largest attendance being 400.

In September 2017, I took over the term as the 4th Country Chair. Our MCC committee has now grown to 13 people.

We ran a very successful session in March this year - “Dare to Dream” – where 400 tickets were sold out within the first two weeks of registration! The event featured two international MDRT speakers, as well as a special luncheon for first time MDRT Qualifiers. At the luncheon, committee members shared with the first time qualifiers what to expect at the Annual Meeting and introduced them to the various resources available to them as a member.

The success of this and all our past events have proven to us that financial practitioners in Singapore continue to be very hungry for such training events.

It gave our committee the confidence that a bigger event like MDRT Day would be something worth organising. We want to bring the MDRT spirit of sharing and learning to Singapore in a bigger way.

What can we expect?

MDRT Day will provide attendees with both proven business practices, as well as inspiring stories of personal journeys. It’s a reminder that behind every successful practitioner, there are personal challenges which had to be overcome for them to be where they are today.

As there will be both members and aspirants attending the event, we’ve put together a line up of speakers and panellists with different levels of experience and backgrounds, so attendees will have someone they can relate to.

Other than the five main speakers, there will be two panel sessions – one consisting of MDRT members and the other consisting of COT and TOT members – for attendees to have closer interaction with some of our local members. We believe that attendees will pick up practical tips from all six panellists who are at different stages of their careers.

Who are the speakers we will learn from?

Dr Mary Chen, a 32-year MDRT member and an industry icon in Singapore. She has qualified for TOT for a remarkable 30 years. She will be sharing on “Back to the Beginner’s Mind, Understanding your Why” where she will share her journey.

Jim Pittman, a 44-year Qualifying and Life Member with 16 TOT and 6 COT qualifications, and President of MDRT. He will share his 10 techniques to take you to the top.

Annie Leung, a 22-year Qualifying and Life member, and MDRT MCC Regional Chair from Hong Kong, will share her inspiring journey from ground zero.

We will also have Eric Feng and Robert Young. They are not practitioners but are familiar faces in our local insurance industry.

How should attendees get the most out of attending this event?

One of the fundamental values of MDRT is that members willingly share their knowledge with other members; they recognise that sharing ideas has been the key to their own growth and success. Not only do we hope attendees will be inspired by the knowledge they will take away, but that they also catch this sharing spirit of MDRT.

We also hope for this to be a great opportunity for attendees to meet up, and build their own community to exchange their business practices and ideas to further grow their business. Furthermore, this meeting will allow aspirants to catch a glimpse of the MDRT experience and use that momentum to achieve their next milestone.

How should financial practitioners get the most out of the MDRT platform?

For members, qualifying as an MDRT member is just the beginning of the MDRT journey. To truly benefit from the membership, a member has to ‘BE MDRT’.

That means to dive in to be a part of the community, read through the available MDRT resources, make use of the members-only toolkit online, reach out and talk to more MDRT members, learn from industry leaders, join the local committee, and more. The more engaged they are with the MDRT community, the more they will grow as a financial practitioner.

For aspiring members, access the massive publicly-available content and materials provided in the Resource Zone at www.mdrt.org. They also have the opportunity to join the mentoring programme where an aspirant and his mentor can register online and have access to regular articles pushed through email to both mentor and aspirant.

MDRT has put in so much effort to provide us with the vast amount of resources online.

I have personally benefited from all these resources and by being part of the community. A lot of what my practice is today, I attribute it to MDRT.

What’s in store for MDRT MCC Singapore?

It is a great honour for me to be Country Chair during this dynamic period. The foremost objective of MCC is to build a stronger local community of MDRT members where they can benefit from each other’s knowledge and experiences.

We have been focussing on building a new generation of MDRT volunteers who want to take on the development of the MCC and MDRT in Singapore, as well as expanding and intensifying our relationships with the insurance companies.

In the recent two years, we have seen a huge growth in the engagement of major companies to develop agent development programmes in line with MDRT objectives. This is a very exciting development as MCC continues to serve as the channel of communication between MDRT and members around the world.
