Taiwan's national health insurance system spent more to treat chronic kidney disease than any other disease in 2019, according to a list of the 10 ailments with the biggest outlays released by the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA).
Treatments for chronic kidney disease, including for kidney dialysis for 92,000 patients, cost the NHIA NT$53.3bn ($1.8bn) in 2019, reported Central News Agency quoting the NHIA figures.

According to the NHIA, the number of dialysis patients grew slightly from 90,000 in 2018 to around 92,000 last year.
Meanwhile, the NHIA statistics showed that the treatment for respiratory disease, given to about 41,000 people in Taiwan last year, had the highest cost per patient at NT$302,000.
